Why Is My Shop Website Slow on Phones? (And How to Speed It Up)
Slow pages lose visitors, especially on a phone with a weak signal. The good news: on most small-business sites, the biggest cause is just oversized photos.
Measure it (free)
- Go to PageSpeed Insights and enter your homepage address.
- Look at the Mobile tab. The key numbers are Google's Core Web Vitals: Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) (how fast the main content appears), Interaction to Next Paint (INP) (how quickly the page responds to taps) and Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) (whether things jump around while loading).
- web.dev describes a "good" experience as LCP within 2.5 seconds, INP of 200 milliseconds or less, and CLS of 0.1 or less.
Common causes and fixes
- Huge photos. A photo straight off a modern phone can be several megabytes. Resize photos to the size they're shown at (often 1,200–2,000 pixels wide is plenty) and compress them. Modern formats like WebP are usually much smaller.
- Images loading before they're needed. Pictures further down the page can be "lazy loaded" so they load only when the visitor scrolls to them. Don't lazy-load the main picture at the top.
- Too many plugins, widgets and trackers. Chat pop-ups, multiple analytics tools, review widgets and sliders all add weight. Remove what you don't use.
- Big auto-playing video or image sliders at the top of the page. A single good photo is usually faster and clearer.
- Cheap or overloaded hosting. Ask your host about caching or a content delivery network (CDN).
Weekly monitoring (coming soon) will include a phone speed test for your homepage each week.
