Plugins, Widgets and Chat Pop-ups: What Slows Your Shop Site Down
Every add-on on your website (a chat bubble, a review carousel, a social feed, several tracking tools, a fancy slider) usually loads extra code, often from another company's servers. Each one may be small, but together they can make a phone wait several seconds before your page is usable. web.dev's guidance on third-party JavaScript explains how these scripts can slow pages down and what to do about it.
Do an add-on audit
- List everything on your site that you didn't write yourself: chat, booking widget, review widget, Facebook or Instagram feed, video embeds, analytics, ad pixels, coupon pop-ups, cookie banners, WordPress plugins.
- For each one, ask: Do we actually use it? Has it brought in a customer or useful data in the last few months? Who set it up, and is it still needed?
- Remove what you don't use. Old tracking codes from a past marketing company are a very common leftover.
- Keep only one of each kind: one analytics tool, one chat tool.
Lighter alternatives
- Social feeds: replace with a simple "Follow us on Facebook" link.
- Review carousels: show two or three real quotes as plain text and link to your Google reviews.
- Video and maps: load them only when needed, or show a picture with a link until someone taps it. Your web person may call this "lazy loading" or a "facade".
- Chat widgets: set them to load after the page has finished loading, or only on the contact page.
WordPress tip
Deactivate plugins one at a time on a test copy of the site (or at a quiet time) and re-run PageSpeed Insights to see which ones matter. Remove deactivated plugins you don't need; they can still be a security risk if left installed and not updated.
Check your own site in seconds
