Core Web Vitals Explained for Shop Owners (LCP, INP, CLS)
Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to describe how a page feels to a real visitor. You'll see them in PageSpeed Insights and in Google Search Console. Google's documentation says good Core Web Vitals align with what its core ranking systems seek to reward, but also that Search always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par. In other words: speed helps, but it's no substitute for useful content.
The three measurements
- Largest Contentful Paint (LCP): how fast the main content shows up. Usually the big photo or headline at the top of the page. web.dev's "good" target is 2.5 seconds or less.
- Interaction to Next Paint (INP): how quickly the page reacts when someone taps. If tapping "Book now" feels laggy, INP is poor. Good is 200 milliseconds or less.
- Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS): whether things jump around while loading. The classic example: you go to tap the phone number and a banner loads above it, so you tap something else. Good is 0.1 or less.
Lab data vs real-visitor data
PageSpeed Insights may show two kinds of results: a simulated test run right then (lab data), and, if your site has enough traffic, real measurements collected from Chrome users over recent weeks (field data). Small shop sites often don't have enough traffic for field data; that's normal. The lab test is still useful for finding problems.
Typical fixes on shop websites
- Poor LCP: compress the top photo, don't lazy-load it, remove sliders, and check server speed and caching.
- Poor INP: usually too much JavaScript. Trim plugins and widgets.
- Poor CLS: set image sizes, reserve space for banners and embeds, and avoid pop-ups that push content down.
How to check
Run PageSpeed Insights on your homepage and main service pages (Mobile tab). In Search Console, the Core Web Vitals report groups pages with similar issues once enough data exists.
