Caching, CDNs and Hosting: Speeding Up Your Shop Website

Once your photos are a sensible size, the next big speed factors are how quickly your server responds and whether visitors' browsers have to re-download the same files on every page. That's where caching and content delivery networks come in.

What caching means

What a CDN is

A content delivery network keeps copies of your site's files on servers in many locations, so they're delivered from somewhere close to the visitor. Many hosts and website builders include one; some offer one on a free plan.

What to check or ask

  1. Run PageSpeed Insights on your homepage and look for suggestions about server response time or "efficient cache policy".
  2. Using a website builder (Wix, Squarespace, Shopify and similar)? Hosting, caching and a CDN are typically handled for you. Focus on images and add-ons instead.
  3. Using WordPress or custom hosting? Ask your host or web person:
    • "Is page caching turned on for my site?"
    • "Do static files have browser cache headers?"
    • "Is there a CDN in front of the site?"
    • "Is my hosting plan shared with many busy sites?"
  4. Test again after any change, on the Mobile tab.

When hosting is the problem

Very cheap shared hosting can be slow at busy times. If your server response time is consistently slow even after caching, it may be worth discussing a better plan or a different host. See choosing a website builder or host.
